The man did not have the necessary documents for his wife to fill out the SIR enumeration form. He had gone to his in-laws' house in search of those documents. After searching all day, the documents were found. On Tuesday evening, while returning home with those documents, the accident occurred.
While cycling back, Khudiram Singh (75), the elderly man, died after being hit by an unknown vehicle. The accident occurred around 7 PM on Tuesday on National Highway 16 between Kharagpur-Baleshwar in the Shyampura area under Belda police station.

According to police sources, the deceased Khudiram Singh's home was in the Madhavchak area under the Khurshi gram panchayat in Narayanganj police station of West Midnapore. Two days ago, he had gone to Belda, to his in-laws' house, to collect the necessary documents for filling out the SIR form.
On Tuesday evening, while returning home, he was hit by an unknown vehicle and fell on the national highway. In critical condition, he was rescued by the National Highway Authority and Belda police station officers and taken to Belda Super Speciality Hospital. There, doctors declared him dead.
The elderly man's family members are mourning the incident. Standing at the hospital premises on Tuesday night, the deceased's grandson, Jyotirmoy Singh, said, "Grandfather had gone to bring documents for filling out the SIR form. This accident happened on his way back!"
The police's preliminary assumption is that the elderly man had gone to bring his wife's documents. Belda police station officers have informed that an investigation into the incident has begun.
