On Friday, during a Supreme Court proceeding, a lawyer allegedly tried to hurl a shoe at Chief Justice Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai. The accused, identified as Rakesh Kishore, was immediately restrained and handed over to the police.
Witnesses reported that Kishore shouted, “Sanatan’s insult will not be tolerated.” Despite the sudden commotion, Chief Justice Gavai stayed composed and unshaken.
Turning to the next lawyer scheduled to present arguments, he said, “Don’t get distracted. We are not distracted by this.”
Officials from the Delhi Police and Supreme Court security later began questioning Kishore to determine the motive behind his outburst.
'Today's incident is a very sad one': Ex-bar association member says
Reacting to the incident, Advocate Rohit Pandey, former secretary of the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA), expressed, “Today's incident is a very sad one. If a lawyer has committed or attempted to commit assault in a court, we strongly condemn it. He is a member of our bar. We recently inquired and found out that he is a member of the 2011 Bar. But it is a very sad incident,” per DNA India.
He added that Kishore’s outburst came after a comment made by the CJI in the Lord Vishnu case, calling it “a very sad incident” and insisting that “if this incident is true, action should be taken.”
