Panic over the ongoing State Identity Register (SIR) process has led to a distressing incident in the Hooghly district. In Dhaniakhali’s Kananadi area, 28-year-old Asha Soren allegedly consumed pesticide along with her six-year-old daughter after failing to receive her SIR form.

Family members claimed she was under severe stress, as everyone in her paternal home had received their forms while she had not. Estranged from her husband’s family for six years, Asha feared that she would not receive any support from them. After the incident, both mother and child were first taken to Dhaniakhali Rural Hospital and later shifted to SSKM Hospital in Kolkata. The mother and daughter are currently undergoing treatment in the ICU on the third floor of the main block of SSKM Hospital. They were kept under observation for 72 hours.

In another case, panic over the SIR list has left a man from Mahaprabhu Para in Kalna bedridden after suffering a stroke. Reports say Kshitish Sharma, who has been living in the area on rent for years, did not find his name in the 2002 SIR list. Since his parents passed away when he was a child, their names were also missing.

The anxiety over this reportedly triggered a stroke while he was driving. With the help of a bystander, he somehow managed to return home and was admitted to Kalna Hospital the following day.
