A few months away from the secondary exams, a teenager committed suicide by hanging after his mother scolded him for spending too much time on his mobile phone instead of studying.
The deceased, Shuvajit Madhu (16), a resident of the northern bank area of Dighi, Kalna. His hanging body was recovered at home on Friday morning. Shuvajit was a tenth-grade student at Nigmananda High School in Kalna town. He was supposed to take the secondary examination next year.
Family members claim that he had been spending long hours on his mobile phone until very late at night recently. On Thursday evening, when his mother, Chhobi Madhu saw him using his mobile phone again, she scolded him lightly. On Friday morning, family members found his hanging body in the room.
Shuvajit's uncle Subhash Pal said, "The secondary examination is coming up. So, his mother had scolded him a little for always being busy with his mobile phone instead of studying. We assume this incident happened as a result of that." Susanta Bandyopadhyay, a psychologist and resident of Kalna town, believes, "Now the social interaction of young boys and girls has decreased significantly. The time they should spend with friends, they are confining themselves to mobile phones during that time. They prefer to spend time this way. Life itself has gradually become mobile-centric."
He further adds, "Moreover, due to their young age, a special emotion works in them, which cannot be accurately guessed from outside. Under its influence, that student could have taken such a decision. I feel that parents need to give adequate time to children of this age. Then this terrible tendency will decrease."
