Abhishek Banerjee, the Trinamool Congress General Secretary, visited Naihati, West Bengal’s famous Boroma temple. He offered prayers to Goddess Kali and dressed the idol in a traditional Banarasi saree.
On his way back, He took with him a kastipathar (touchstone) idol and a framed photograph of Boroma as gifts for West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. Abhishek had earlier announced his plan to seek blessings at Boroma’s temple — and on Tuesday, October 21, afternoon, he fulfilled that promise.
This year marks the 102nd year of the Boroma Puja in Naihati. The century-old celebration has grown into a massive spiritual gathering, drawing lakhs of devotees from across the country. Pilgrims take holy bath in the Ganges river before visiting the temple, offering prayers, and performing rituals in devotion. Many people have overcome with emotion; some break down in tears in front of the goddess, others gaze silently at her face, filled with faith and reverence. The air here is thick with devotion, emotion, and mysticism- a truly unique blend of the spiritual and the miraculous.
Although the Boroma Puja is over a hundred years old, it was originally performed before a photograph of the goddess at Naihati’s Aurobindo Road temple. On the occasion of the centenary, the temple was completely renovated, and a permanent idol of Boroma was installed. Now, devotees visit the shrine throughout the year — but the ‘Dipanwita Amavasya’ Puja remains the grandest and most sacred.
Opposite the main temple, a towering idol of Goddess Kali is worshipped — her immense height earning her the name Boroma. Devotees come from across India and abroad to catch a glimpse of her. Abhishek first offered his prayers before this grand idol, accompanied by Barrackpore MP Partha Bhowmick and Naihati MLA Sanat Dey, before visiting the Boroma temple to complete his puja.
