West Bengal Police is setting up an Artificial Intelligence (AI) Cell to streamline operations, boost transparency, and strengthen data-driven policing across the state.

The West Bengal Police is initiating an Artificial Intelligence Cell to improve efficiency, transparency, and quality in public service. The order was issued by DGP Rajeev Kumar from the Police Directorate at Bhawani Bhawan and looks to make policing smarter and evidence based.

Who will head the AI cell?

As per the notification, the newly formed Cell will be headed by an officer of the rank of Additional Director General (ADG), who will be the Chairman of the cell and be responsible for all major policy decisions. The Cell will function under the administrative supervision of the DGP.

Besides the Chairman, an officer of the rank of Inspector General (IG), Deputy Inspector General (DIG), or Superintendent of Police (SP). They will assist in matters relating to coordination, documentation, and progress tracking.

It will also involve the appointment of two experts in AI, providing technical and advisory support. The Cell may invite experts and resource and resource persons as necessary to supplement its work from time to time.

What will be the Cell’s duty?

The notification also states that the AI Cell will serve as the nodal unit for planning, integrating, and overseeing AI-related initiatives across the department and will operate under the administrative control of the state DGP. It shall draft and update the AI strategy and framework of the police-from policy development to ethical implementation.

Its mandate includes identifying operations where AI can enhance accuracy, efficiency, and decision-making. In addition, the Cell shall coordinate with all the branches for the development and implementation of various pilot projects utilizing AI tools.

How will it build awareness and skills?

The notification further states that the Cell will organise workshops, training programs, and seminars to inculcate AI literacy among police personnel. Collaboration with academia, startups, and technology experts is aimed at enhancing innovation and research partnerships.

Reportedly, The AI Cell will hold a meeting at least once every two weeks and submit a detailed report every six months. It will be located at the Police Headquarters in Bhawani Bhawan and shall be fully supported administratively, financially, and technically.
