Senior BJP leader and Union Minister of State for Education & Development, Dr. Sukanta Majumdar, was allegedly attacked by perpetrators in Nadia on Tuesday. A group of miscreants attacked his convoy. The attackers vandalised the vehicle the BJP leader was in, along with the other accompanying vehicles.

Several BJP workers have reportedly been injured in this incident.

BJP spokesperson Avra Sen, while speaking with News Ei Samay, has criticised the event and pointed finger at the ruling party.

According to a report by NDTV, Majumdar had attended a series of party programmes across the district earlier in the day. While returning from one such programme, his convoy was allegedly caught amid clashes between the Trinamool Congress and Bharatiya Janata Party supporters. In the ensuing chaos, one of the vehicles in his convoy was attacked by party workers, sources said.

Majumdar alleges ‘unprovoked’ assault

Majumdar claimed the attack on his convoy was “totally unprovoked” and was carried out by some Trinamool Congress leaders and workers, all of whom were in an inebriated state. He further alleged that several BJP workers accompanying him were severely beaten up by ruling party-backed goons, with some sustaining serious injuries.

TMC denies allegations, blames BJP for provocation

The report also suggests that the local Trinamool Congress leadership, however, denied the allegations. Biman Saha, chairman of the Trinamool Congress-run Nabadwip Municipality, claimed the tension broke out at the main bus stand in Nabadwip after BJP supporters allegedly attacked a local office of the TMC's trade union wing, INTTUC. When INTTUC supporters were protesting near the bus stand, they were again attacked by local BJP supporters, which led to scuffles between the two groups, NDTV quoted Saha as saying.

Recently, West Bengal has been witnessing such incidents of violence in the past few months. Last month, the vehicle of BJP MP Khagen Murmu was attacked in Jalpaiguri. In October, the convoy of BJP's Darjeeling MP Raju Bista was assaulted in the Sukhia Pokhari area.
