29th August, Friday: The divorce petition filed by Sovan Chatterjee and Rantra Chatterjee got dismissed by the Alipore court. Though Sovan and Ratna don't stay together, legally, the much-discussed Sovan–Ratna marriage relationship has not ended in divorce.
The appeals of divorce that were made by Sovan Chatterjee could not be proven in court. He had filed the case on the grounds of cruelty, alleging that Ratna Chatterjee did not look after their children and misused money, but none of these claims were substantiated. As a result, the judge ruled that there will be no legal divorce, though the two will continue to live separately. On the other hand, the court also turned down Ratna Chatterjee’s plea to resume living with her husband.
Since 2018, Chatterjee has been living separately from his wife. Citing threats to his life from Ratna, Sovan left his house in Behala and now lives in the Golpark area with Baisakhi Banerjee. Baisakhi Banerjee is a university lecturer and member of TMC's teachers' unit, with whom he has been having an extramarital affair since 2009. On the other hand, Ratna has blamed Baisaikhi for instigating trouble in their married life.
Married life of Sovan Chatterjee
Sovan Chatterjee and Baishaki Banerjee have been spotted together several times on many occasions. The media captured Baisakhi sobbing in front of Alipore Jail security guards so she could meet Sovan, when he was arrested for the Narada sting operation. They declined, citing the fact that she was unrelated to him. On the other hand, Ratna was permitted to meet Sovan in jail, but Sovan declined to meet her.
Sovan Chatterjee married Ratna, daughter of Dulal Chandra Das, in 2001. They have a son, Saptarshi. Anandabazar Patrika reported that he has made Baisakhi his legal heir, displacing his wife and son.
