West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee took a jab at Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Wednesday, warning Prime Minister Narendra Modi, “Ek din woh aapka Mir Jafar ban jaayega [One day he will become your Mir Jafar].”
Speaking to reporters after returning from North Bengal, Banerjee accused, “This is all Amit Shah’s game. He behaves like he is the acting Prime Minister of the country. The Prime Minister knows everything. We can request the Prime Minister not to trust Amit Shah always. One day, he will become your Mir Jafar [traitor],” alluding to the Bengal general who betrayed Nawab Siraj-ud-Daulah during British rule, per The Hindu.
The Trinamool Congress (TMC) chief has repeatedly accused Shah in the past of making major decisions on behalf of the Prime Minister.
Bengal CM slams BJP as ‘arrogant’
Banerjee also lashed out at the “arrogance and high-handedness” of the ruling party. “Horrible behaviour of a horrible government. I have seen so many governments, but not one was so arrogant and dictatorial. Their leader comes here and says we will exclude so many lakh voters from Bengal,” she said,
The Chief Minister expressed strong reservations about the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls currently being carried out in the state. “Tell me, amidst natural calamity, rainy season, how can the SIR process be completed in 15 days?” she asked, calling the move impractical and politically motivated.
Bengal CM also voiced frustration over the sudden cancellation of the inauguration of the new Birla Opus paint factory near Kharagpur, which she was scheduled to open on Thursday.
“Yesterday, I told reporters that I was supposed to inaugurate the Birla Opus factory on Thursday. The factory is ready. After half an hour, a message came. It said that I am unwell. I apologise for the sudden cancellation of the event. I don’t want to blame the Birla family. I think this is the work of a highly loaded virus. It is threatening everyone,” Banerjee remarked.
