West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee drew strong criticism on Sunday for participating in the Durga Puja Carnival on Kolkata’s Red Road, only hours after relentless rains and landslides devastated parts of Darjeeling and claimed multiple lives. The Opposition BJP described her decision as “insensitive” and “irresponsible,” arguing that she should have travelled to the affected region immediately.

According to a report by The Indian Express, Mamata Banerjee had earlier acknowledged that the situation in North Bengal was “grave” and announced plans to visit the area on Monday. Despite that assurance, her appearance at the carnival, where she was seen alongside with actor Ankush Hazra, triggered criticism from political leaders and citizens alike.

State BJP president Samik Bhattacharya said the Chief Minister should have cancelled her appearance at the event, adding that “today is not a happy day” and “in these difficult times, there was no need for the carnival.” He also alleged that the government’s failure to improve drainage systems in North Bengal over the past decade had worsened the crisis.

Public anger surfaces on social media

Social media users expressed their disapproval, urging Banerjee to focus on relief efforts. One user on X appealed to her directly, saying she should “please focus on North Bengal.” Another, Subhajit Banerjee, remarked that “many people are crying, and you are here to celebrate the carnival.”

User Anirban Biswas said the Chief Minister “should have prioritised addressing the crisis rather than joining the so-called Puja carnival,” and added that “the event could have been postponed to help the marooned people who once voted for you.”

Opposition urges immediate action as Centre steps in

Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari accused Mamata Banerjee for neglecting her responsibilities and said “the entire state government is busy with celebrations while North Bengal faces a disaster.” Union Home Minister Amit Shah said he had spoken to BJP MP Raju Bista and confirmed that NDRF teams were already on the ground, with additional units on standby.
