Bhutan issues alert as Wangchu river water level reaches critical limit

Water level at the Bhutan's Wangchu river reaches the critical limit following recent weeks' severe rainfall in the surrounding region.

Bhutan's National Centre for Hydrology and Meteorology (NCHM) has issued an alert upon receiving information from the Druk Green Power Corporation (DGPC) that Tala Hydropower Dam gates have failed to open, causing river water to overflow the dam.

Recently, the Wangchu River in the Chukha district of Bhutan has experienced a surge in the water level due to heavy rainfall. Increasing the inflow of water level at the Tala Hydropower Dam, resulting in exceeding the dam's capacity.

The advisory issued by the Bhutan National Centre for Hydrology and Meteorology (NCHM) reads, "The National Centre for Hydrology and Meteorology (NCHM) received information from the Druk Green Power Corporation (DGPC) that Tala Hydropower Dam gates failed to open and river water is overflowing the dam."

The alert also reads, "It is requested to be ALERT and inform the State Government of West Bengal, India to prepare for eventualities. The Office of TMO, Flood Warning under the National Centre for Hydrology and Meteorology (NCHM), Bhutan will continue to update the situation in coordination with the DGPC."
