Zohran Mamdani was sworn in as the 111th mayor of New York City on Tuesday, creating history. The 34-year-old is also the city's very first Muslim mayor and the first person of South Asian descent to lead New York in its 400-year history in American politics. Trump's post aimed at the mayor-elect
US President Donald Trump has been warning against Mamdani from the beginning of the race. Starting from calling him a communist, on the day before the elections, President Trump has even threatened to stop federal funding in New York if Mamdani wins.
Following Mamdani's victory address in Brooklyn, US President Trump has shared a post on Truth Social, responding to the new mayor's speech. His post reads, "...AND SO IT BEGINS!"
Mamdani declares war against the rich
During his speech, the new mayor stated that he has taken a vow to end corruption and ta the poor, besides addressing various threats of President Trump. Also stated that, "After all, if anyone can show a nation betrayed by Donald Trump how to defeat him, it is the city that gave rise to him."
"As has so often occurred, the billionaire class has sought to convince those making $30 an hour that their enemies are those earning $20 an hour. They want the people to fight amongst ourselves so that we remain distracted from the work of remaking a long-broken system. We refuse to let them dictate the rules of the game anymore. They can play by the same rules as the rest of us," said Mamdani.
He went on saying, "We will hold bad landlords to account because the Donald Trumps of our city have grown far too comfortable taking advantage of their tenants. We will put an end to the culture of corruption that has allowed billionaires like Trump to evade taxation and exploit tax breaks."
Mamdani will officially assume office on January 1, 2026, as New York's youngest mayor.
