What happened around 6 pm?
At approximately 6:00 PM local time, the area near 17th Street NW and Pennsylvania Avenue was busy with tourists, media personnel, and security staff. The President was inside the White House as routine activity continued outside the security perimeter.
Around 6:15 PM, an individual reportedly approached a checkpoint carrying a bag. According to the Secret Service, the man then pulled out a firearm and began firing at officers stationed there. The sudden gunfire caused panic in the vicinity, with several people rushing for cover as shots were heard.

Gunman shot dead by Secret Service
The suspect was shot during the exchange and later succumbed to injuries at a hospital, officials confirmed. The Secret Service stated that no law enforcement personnel were injured in the incident.
