Celebrated Indian-American filmmaker Mira Nair’s son, Zohran Mamdani, made history by winning the New York City mayoral election, becoming the city’s first Muslim and youngest-ever mayor.
Nair shared an Instagram story that quickly went viral. She reposted a congratulatory story from filmmaker Zoya Akhtar, captioning, “Zohran, you beauty,” along with Jay-Z’s iconic ‘Empire State of Mind.’

Mamdani, a Democratic-Socialist, pulled off a huge win against former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa.
The Associated Press noted that, with over 91% of the votes counted, Mamdani secured 1,035,646 votes, around 50% of the total ballots cast, while Cuomo secured 854,738 votes (41.6%). Mamdani will officially assume office on January 1, 2026.

Born to Mira Nair and Ugandan-American academic Mahmood Mamdani, Zohran has always been a progressive voice in politics, housing and immigrant rights.
During his victory speech, Mamdani didn’t shy away from taking a direct jab at Donald Trump.

“I know you’re watching,” he said. “So Donald Trump, since I know you’re watching, I have four words for you: Turn the volume up! To get to any of us, you will have to get through all of us.”
“New York will remain a city of immigrants, a city built by immigrants, powered by immigrants and as of tonight, led by an immigrant,” he reaffirmed.
