The Kathmandu District Police Office has forwarded complaints filed against former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and former Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak to the high-level commission investigating the September Gen-Z protests.

The move follows allegations that the two leaders were responsible for crimes against humanity and state offences during the violent crackdown on protesters on September 8 and 9, according to an ANI report.

According to reports, the complaints were filed by the families of four victims of the protests, which erupted against corruption and the social media ban.

Police accepted the complaints but stopped short of registering them, saying the matter falls under the jurisdiction of the commission led by former Justice Karki.

The Karki Commission was established by Nepal’s interim government to probe all human and material losses during the Gen-Z movement and to determine accountability for the excessive use of force by security agencies.

Commission says government can act without delay

In a statement on Tuesday, the Karki-led commission clarified that the government and law enforcement agencies do not need to wait for its report to take action against those found guilty of criminal offences.

The clarification came after confusion over a Home Ministry statement suggesting investigations would be paused until the commission’s work was complete. The ministry later clarified that illegal acts such as vandalism or arson can still be pursued under existing laws.

Families of victims have urged swift justice, accusing authorities of delaying accountability for the 21 deaths during the Gen-Z uprising.
