María Corina Machado, Venezuelan politician and human rights advocate, wins the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize for her decades-long fight for democracy, social justice, and civil liberties.

Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado has been awarded the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize as announced by the Norwegian Nobel Committee announced on Friday.

The committee praised her “relentless efforts in promoting democracy, human rights, and freedom in Venezuela.” Machado said, “This prize is for the Venezuelan people, who continue to fight for their rights and dignity despite immense challenges.”

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio called her “the personification of resilience, tenacity, and patriotism.”

The Nobel Peace Prize, carrying 11 million Swedish crowns (~$1.2 million), honours global contributions to peace, human rights, and conflict resolution. The award ceremony is on December 10 in Oslo.
