Powerful earthquake strikes Indonesia, no tsunami alert issued

A devastating earthquake rocked Indonesia. According to sources, a powerful earthquake was felt in Papua, Indonesia, on Thursday. The earthquake measured 6.7 on the Richter scale. However, no casualties have been reported so far. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) has reported the earthquake.

It has been learned that the earthquake's epicentre was about 200 kilometres away from Papua's Abepura city. Abepura is a densely populated city with more than 62,000 residents. The earthquake's source was 70 kilometres deep beneath the Earth's surface.

Despite the strong tremors, no tsunami warning has been issued by the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre. However, the extent of damage is not yet known. Authorities are currently monitoring the entire situation. Indonesia is located in the earthquake-prone region known as the Pacific 'Ring of Fire'. Therefore, powerful earthquakes are frequently felt there.
