Tragedy struck ahead of the Gaza peace summit event as three diplomats from Qatar’s Amiri Diwan died in a car crash near the Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh in Egypt on Sunday, October 12. The Qatari embassy in Egypt confirmed the incident. Two others travelling with them were seriously injured. The diplomats were reportedly travelling from Qatar to attend the summit.
Two others were injured and are receiving medical treatment at Sharm el-Sheikh International Hospital.
In a post on X, the Qatar embassy wrote: "The Embassy of the State of Qatar in Cairo expresses its deepest sorrow over the death of three members of the Amiri Diwan and is following up on the conditions of the injured in a traffic accident in Sharm El-Sheikh."
The embassy further stated, “The Embassy of the State of Qatar in Cairo extends its heartfelt condolences and sincere sympathies to the families of the deceased, praying that God envelops them in His vast mercy, accepts them in Paradise, and grants the injured a speedy recovery”.
World leaders converge in Egypt for Gaza Peace Summit chaired by Trump
The Gaza summit aims to end the war in Gaza and bring peace to West Asia. It will be held in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, and representatives from about 20 countries will attend.
The Gaza Summit will be held on Monday at the Red Sea resort in the city of Sharm el-Sheikh. Stopping the war between Hamas and Israel in Gaza and releasing prisoners of war will be discussed. Diplomats were on their way to Egypt from Qatar for the conference. The accident took place when their car was about 50 km away from the town of Sharm el-Sheikh. The Qatari diplomats' car overturned. Three people were killed, and 2 were seriously injured. The cause of the accident is yet to be ascertained.
The deceased were identified by the Qatari Ministry of Foreign Affairs as Saud bin Nasser Al Thani, Abdullah Ghanem Al-Khulaifi, and Hassan Jaber Al-Jaber. The two injured officials, Abdullah Issa Al-Kuwari and Mohammed Abdulaziz Al-Buainain,
Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi said US President Donald Trump will chair this summit. Diplomats from different countries will also be present. French President Emmanuel Macron, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres will attend the summit. British Prime Minister Starmer will also be present at the summit.
