Former Union Home Minister, Lok Sabha Speaker and veteran Congress leader Shivraj Patil has passed away. He breathed his last at his home in Latur, Maharashtra on December 12. He was 90 years old. The leader had been suffering from various health issues for a long time. Shivraj Patil had won Lok Sabha elections seven times from the Latur Lok Sabha constituency.
Shivraj Patil's legacy
Shivraj Patil entered national politics in 1980. He won from the Latur Lok Sabha constituency and became a member of Parliament. He was given the portfolio of Minister of State for Defence (from 1980 to 1982) in Prime Minister Indira Gandhi's cabinet. He won Lok Sabha elections in 1980, 1984, 1989, 1991, 1998 and 1999. He had resigned on moral grounds on November 30, 2008 following security lapses after the 26/11 Mumbai attacks. Before taking charge as Home Minister, Patil handled multiple important responsibilities. From 1983 to 1986, he served as President of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research India. Besides this, he was a member of various important government committees.

After the 26/11 Mumbai attacks, Shivraj was appointed as Governor of Punjab and Haryana. Leaders from various political parties have expressed deep condolences on his death.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi wrote on his X handle, "Saddened by the passing of Shri Shivraj Patil Ji. He was an experienced leader, having served as MLA, MP, Union Minister, Speaker of the Maharashtra Assembly as well as the Lok Sabha during his long years in public life. He was passionate about contributing to the welfare of society. I have had many interactions with him over the years, the most recent one being when he came to my residence a few months ago. My thoughts are with his family in this sad hour. Om Shanti."

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge wrote on X, "Deeply saddened by the passing of former Union Home Minister, Former Lok Sabha Speaker and veteran Congress leader Shri Shivraj Patil. He was an honoured senior colleague with whom I shared a close bond and many cherished memories."
He added, "A statesman of great dignity, Shri Patil served the nation with distinction, holding key Constitutional and Parliamentary responsibilities and contributing significantly to India’s Democratic institutions. His demise is a profound loss for the Congress Party and for all who admired his integrity, composure and commitment to public service."
Home Minister Amit Shah wrote about his predecessor, "Saddened by the demise of former Union Minister Shivraj Patil Chakurkar Ji. With a career spanning several decades, Patil Ji was known for his vast knowledge of public affairs and his dedicated service. Heartfelt condolences to his family members and well-wishers."
