As a result of the current security situation, the US Embassy Jerusalem has directed all US government employees and their family members to shelter in place until further notice. The Government of Israel has closed the airspace to all civilian flights. All commercial flights from Ben Gurion Airport have been cancelled.

"This is provided for your information as you make your own security plans," the US Embassy said.

The Embassy has urged the US citizens of the "continued need for caution and increased personal security awareness". This includes "knowing the location of the nearest shelter in the event of a red alert as security incidents, including mortar, rocket, and missile fire, and unmanned aircraft system (UAS) intrusions, which often take place without any warning. The security environment is complex and can change quickly".

"In response to security incidents and without advance notice, the US Embassy may further restrict or prohibit US government employees and their family members from travelling to certain areas of Israel (including the Old City of Jerusalem) and the West Bank," it added.

What actions to take

The Embassy has asked people to refer to the website for the latest security alerts. Besides this, it has asked all US government employees and their family members to 'be aware of your surroundings".

"Learn the location of the nearest bomb shelter or other hardened shelter. Download the Home Front Command Red Alert application or similar apps for mobile devices (available on devices within Israel) to receive real time alerts for rocket and missile attacks and armed UAV intrusions," it stated.

The Embassy cautioned and asked people to avoid all demonstrations and large gatherings and all areas where there is a heavy police presence. It further asked people to keep monitoring local media and follow the instructions of local authorities.

"Enroll in the Department of State's Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP). STEP enrollment gives you the latest security updates and makes it easier for the US Embassy to contact you in an emergency," it stated.
