Monsoon enters North Bengal; IMD forecasts thunderstorms for Kolkata, heavy rain in several districts

Monsoon has entered North Bengal, while IMD forecasts rain, thunderstorms and gusty winds across Kolkata and several South Bengal districts over the next few days.

The weather across West Bengal continues to fluctuate between intense heat and spells of rain, leaving residents guessing about what comes next. While the southwest monsoon has already arrived in North Bengal, South Bengal is currently witnessing pre-monsoon activity, bringing the possibility of rain and thunderstorms over the coming days.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), most districts of the state are likely to experience rain, accompanied by gusty winds and thunderstorm activity.

Kolkata may see afternoon rain, thunderstorms

Thursday began with bright sunshine over Kolkata, resulting in humid and uncomfortable conditions. However, the weather is expected to change later in the day.

The IMD has forecast light to moderate rain accompanied by thunderstorms in the city during the afternoon and evening hours. Gusty winds reaching speeds of 40 to 50 kmph may also occur.

The maximum temperature in Kolkata on Thursday was recorded at 35.2 degrees Celsius, which is 0.7 degrees above normal. The minimum temperature stood at 23.0 degrees Celsius, 4.2 degrees below the seasonal average.

Heavy rain alert for parts of South Bengal

Several districts of South Bengal are likely to receive significant rainfall on Thursday. Heavy rain has been forecast for Purba Bardhaman and Bankura. Rainfall activity is also expected in Paschim Bardhaman, Purulia, Paschim Medinipur, Jhargram and Purba Medinipur.

Weather officials have warned that thunderstorms associated with Kalbaisakhi conditions may develop in some areas. Wind speeds could reach 50 to 60 kmph during these events. Special caution has been advised for coastal districts, where weather conditions may turn adverse at short notice.

The weather department expects scattered rain and thunderstorm activity to persist across multiple districts of South Bengal over the next several days.

Although rain is likely to provide temporary relief, hot and humid conditions may continue during the morning hours before clouds build up later in the day.

Monsoon strengthens grip over North Bengal

North Bengal has already come under the influence of the southwest monsoon, with widespread rainfall reported across the region.

Heavy rain is likely in Jalpaiguri, Cooch Behar, Alipurduar, Uttar Dinajpur and Dakshin Dinajpur on Thursday, according to the IMD.

The forecast suggests that Jalpaiguri, Alipurduar and Cooch Behar could continue to receive heavy rainfall on Friday and Saturday as well, indicating an active monsoon phase in the region.
