Tensions in the Middle East escalated sharply as the United States carried out a second consecutive day of military strikes inside Iran, while Tehran responded with attacks targeting American military installations in the region.
The US military's Central Command (CENTCOM) said it conducted "additional self-defence strikes" against multiple targets in Iran. The operation came shortly after US President Donald Trump and senior officials warned that Washington was prepared to intensify military action against the Islamic Republic.
According to local media reports, Iranian air defence systems were activated across several southern regions. Explosions were reported in western Tehran, Fars province, Bandar Abbas, Qeshm Island, Kish, Minab and parts of central Isfahan.
U.S. Central Command forces began launching additional self-defense strikes today at 5:15 p.m. ET against multiple targets in Iran at the Commander in Chief’s direction. The strikes are in response to Iran’s unwarranted and continued aggression.

Per NDTV, Tasnim news agency reported that the strikes targeted 18 key installations at bases hosting American troops. The extent of damage or casualties was not immediately clear.
The IRGC also claimed that it had shut down the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial route for global oil shipments.
"Effective immediately, due to insecurity in the region, the Strait of Hormuz is declared closed to all vessels, including oil tankers and commercial ships," the IRGC source was quoted as saying by NDTV.
CENTCOM disputes Hormuz closure claim
The US military quickly challenged the Iranian announcement. CENTCOM stated that the claim was false and noted that commercial shipping traffic continued through the strategic waterway.
"Commercial ships are continuing to transit in and out of the Strait of Hormuz tonight" despite the fresh hostilities, CENTCOM said.
Trump details military operation
Speaking to Fox News, Trump warned that further military action could follow if Iran rejects a peace proposal presented by US negotiators.
He said that "49 Tomahawk missiles were used to hit targets inside of Iran, some of them as close as 40 miles (64 km) from the Iranian capital of Tehran".
