The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has fined IndiGo Rs 22.2 crore for the massive disruptions in services that happened in December 2025. The disruptions went on for 68 days, for which the regulator has fined the airline Rs 3 lakh for each day. Along with that, a one-time systemic penalty of Rs 1.80 crore has been imposed on the airline.

The IndiGo disruptions

In December last year, 2,507 Indigo flights were cancelled, and 1,852 flights were delayed. What started as a single-day crunch soon turned into a 10-day-long episode. The DGCA formed a four-member committee to investigate the major disruptions.

As the situation worsened, chaos spread across terminals. Passengers were left stranded and rushed to collect their luggage. Checked-in bags were seen lying scattered on airport floors. Social media soon filled with photos and videos showing the confusion.

The DGCA also ordered IndiGo to submit a Rs 50 crore bank guarantee. This is meant to ensure long-term improvements in its systems. The direction came in addition to the Rs 22.2 crore fine imposed on the airline, Live Mint reported.

Indigo issues statement

In response to the fine imposed on them, IndiGo has issued a statement. A message from the Chairman and Board of Directors of InterGlobe Aviation read, "We are in receipt of the orders of the Directorate General of Civil Aviation of India in relation to the events which led to a major operational disruption of IndiGo's flights in early December, 2025."

The statement further read, "We would like to take this opportunity to inform all of our stakeholders, particularly our valued customers, that the Board and the Management of IndiGo are committed to taking full cognizance of the orders and will, in a thoughtful and timely manner, take appropriate measures."

"Additionally, an in-depth review of the robustness and resilience of the internal processes at IndiGo has been underway since the disruption to ensure that the airline emerges stronger out of these events in its otherwise pristine record of 19+ years of operations," the airline stated.
