A routine ride turns deadly on Mumbai local after door-closing dispute

A 21-year-old was stabbed to death on a moving Mumbai local train after a row over closing the coach door. Police arrested the accused from Kurla; the attack was caught on video.

A 21-year-old man was allegedly stabbed to death inside a moving Mumbai local train on Tuesday night after an argument over closing the coach door escalated during heavy rain, police said.

The victim, identified as Mayank Lohar, was travelling in the first-class compartment of a Churchgate-Nallasopara fast local when the fight broke out between Goregaon and Kandivali. The attack happened inside the train as passengers moved through the compartment, and the dispute turned fatal before the train reached the next stretch.

Arrest and video evidence

Police said the accused, Roshan Suvarna, was arrested from the Kurla area of Mumbai after the incident. NDTV reported that a video from the train showed the accused, dressed in black and holding a knife, walking away after the attack, with bloodstains visible on the metal seats.

In the footage, bystanders can be heard saying, “He killed him”. The video also showed passengers moving away as the accused turned back to look at the victim lying on the train floor in a pool of blood.

Police account of the confrontation

The Western Railway Police said the confrontation intensified after some passengers began assaulting the accused, following which he pulled out a knife from his bag and attacked Lohar.

Senior Police Inspector Datta Khuprekar of Borivali Railway Police informed us that the two passengers fought over closing the train’s door amid rainfall and that the accused stabbed the victim before fleeing the scene. The victim died on the spot. Police later took possession of the body and sent it for a post-mortem examination.

A household left in profound grief

The incident drew a strong emotional reaction from Lohar’s family. His mother, speaking to reporters, demanded justice for her son, while his sister said she wanted the accused to be given the death penalty.

She also questioned why no one intervened during the attack and said her brother had never caused trouble or fought with anyone. The family described Lohar as quiet and unassuming and pressed the police for swift action.
