Banks shut across states on May 1; RBI lists 12 holidays in May

Bank holiday on May 1: Check which states have bank closures and the full RBI holiday calendar for May 2026.

Banks in various states have announced closure on May 1 in honor of Labour Day in India, as well as the state of Maharashtra celebrating its Foundation Day.

According to the calendar provided by the Reserve Bank of India, various states, including those of Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Kerala, West Bengal, Goa, and Assam, have declared holidays.

Cities where banks are closed on this date

Some of the important cities witnessing bank closure on this day include Mumbai, Chennai, Bangalore, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Kochi, New Delhi, Patna, Raipur, Lucknow, Guwahati, and others. Customers in these cities will not be able to access in-branch services and are advised to plan transactions accordingly.

In some regions, additional local observances such as Buddha Purnima have also contributed to the shutdown.

A month packed with bank holidays

The list of Bank holidays in 2026 is going to consist of 12 days inclusive of Sundays and some regional holidays according to the schedule issued by RBI.

All Sundays will be bank holidays – May 3, 10, 17, 24 and 31. Apart from these days, banks will be closed on second and fourth Saturdays that fall on May 9 and May 23 respectively.

There will be regional holidays as well. Some examples of such holidays will include State Day on May 16 in Gangtok, Kazi Nazrul Islam Jayanti on May 26 in Agartala and Bakri Id/Eid-ul-Adha on May 27 and May 28 in multiple cities.

Online banking services as always operational

Even though banks will not open physically during this period, customers will still be able to perform banking activities online via net banking, mobile apps and other payment gateways like UPI.

Hence, customers can rest assured that their transactions will go through smoothly without any interruption. The only thing to keep in mind is that there could be regional differences regarding holiday dates.
