The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has started testing a new Cell Broadcast Alert system across India. India on Saturday tested a new system as the government formally launched its indigenous Cell Broadcast emergency alert system. The purpose is to improve disaster communication by sending emergency alerts directly to mobile phones. If users receive a flash SMS, it is only a test, so there is no need to panic.

The government is developing this system to provide faster and wider alerts during emergencies like earthquakes, floods, tsunamis, and chemical accidents. It is currently under testing to check its performance before being launched nationwide.

What is NDMA cell broadcast alert system

According to India Today reports, the Cell Broadcast Alert system is a technology that sends emergency messages directly to mobile phones in a specific area. It is being developed under the Integrated Alert System (SACHET) by C-DOT. The system is based on the Common Alerting Protocol (CAP), which is recommended by the International Telecommunication Union. The system follows international standards to ensure reliable disaster communication across India.

How test alerts work on mobile phones

During testing, users may hear a loud alarm and see a flashing message on their screens. The alert may say: “NDMA will test Cell Broadcast Alerts on 2 May 2026 in your area. On receiving the message on your mobile phone, no action is required. Please do not panic.” These alerts appear only on devices with test channels enabled.

Purpose and nationwide rollout plan

According to India Today reports, the main purpose of these tests is to check the strength and reliability of India’s emergency alert network. After full testing, the system will send alerts in multiple Indian languages to all mobile users, even without special settings enabled. It will be used during natural disasters and emergency situations.

The NDMA alert system is designed to improve public safety by sending instant warnings during emergencies. It helps authorities quickly reach people and reduce risks during disasters. The system is part of India’s effort to build stronger digital emergency infrastructure.
