An exchange of fire occurred between Indian and Pakistani forces in the Keran sector of North Kashmir's Kupwara district on January 20-21, according to defence sources.
The hostilities erupted when personnel from the 6 Rashtriya Rifles were setting up high-tech surveillance cameras in the Keran Bala area in an effort to improve border security and eliminate blind spots along the Line of Control (LoC).
Pakistani troops allegedly fired two rounds of small arms to interfere with the setup of the surveillance cameras prompting the Indian Army to respond with one precise calibrated return shot.
Neither side reported any casualties but following this incident the Indian Army has commenced a cordon and search operation within the heavy forest area in suspicion that the firing may have been intended as a cover for an infiltration attempt.
Security measures within this sector have been enhanced as the Army continues to modernise its technical surveillance measures for traditional infiltration routes during winter.
