Lakshadweep, India’s smallest Union Territory, is known for its crystal-clear lagoons, coral reefs, white-sand beaches and peaceful island atmosphere. For years, many travellers interested in visiting the islands found the entry process more complicated than other domestic destinations because permits were mandatory and required multiple formalities. Now, new rules introduced for 2026 are expected to make travel planning easier and more convenient for tourists.

The updated changes simplify parts of the permit system while continuing to maintain security checks. For many visitors, this could mean a smoother path to planning a long-awaited island holiday.

Local sponsor requirement removed

One of the most significant changes is the removal of the local sponsor requirement. Earlier, many travellers needed support from a resident, hotel operator, or authorised contact in Lakshadweep while applying for permits. This often became a challenge for first-time tourists who had no contacts on the islands.

Under the revised system, visitors can apply for permits independently without arranging a local sponsor. This change is likely to help solo travellers, families and groups who want a more direct application process.

For people making last-minute holiday plans, the removal of this step may also reduce delays and confusion during booking.

Police clearance no longer needed from the home state

Another major update is the removal of the earlier police clearance requirement from the traveller’s home state. Previously, applicants had to secure a police verification certificate before moving ahead with their Lakshadweep permit request.

Now, the external clearance step has been replaced with internal verification by the Lakshadweep Police after the application is submitted. This reduces paperwork for tourists and cuts down the number of separate approvals required.

The move is expected to save time while still allowing authorities to carry out security checks through their own system.

What travellers still need to follow

Although the process has been relaxed, permits are still compulsory for visiting Lakshadweep. Travellers must apply in advance and submit the required documents before their journey.

Reports indicate that applications should be made at least 14 days before travel. Visitors are also expected to mention the specific islands they plan to visit, along with their intended dates.

This means travellers should finalise their itinerary in advance rather than making flexible plans after arrival. Entry permissions are usually linked to the islands listed in the approved permit.

Transit rules travellers should know

The administration has also outlined transit norms. Visitors can transit through Kavaratti or Agatti, and the permitted transit period is limited to 12 hours.

This is important for those arriving by air or sea and connecting onward to another island. Understanding transit timing in advance can help travellers avoid scheduling issues during the trip.

Travellers are also advised to confirm permits before booking flights or other transport arrangements to reduce the risk of cancellations or changes.

Why the changes matter

Lakshadweep has become increasingly popular among travellers seeking a quieter beach destination away from crowded tourist hotspots. Activities such as snorkelling, scuba diving, kayaking and lagoon stays continue to attract interest.

However, the earlier permit formalities often discouraged spontaneous travel plans. By removing some of the more difficult steps, the 2026 rules may encourage more domestic tourists to consider Lakshadweep.

With easier access, clearer procedures and continued regulation, the islands could see stronger tourism interest in the coming months. For travellers dreaming of turquoise waters and serene beaches, Lakshadweep may now be more accessible than ever before.
