Unhealthy eating habits and irregular lifestyle—this dual attack is wreaking havoc on our liver. Digestive problems and diseases like fatty liver are weakening people at a young age. If proper care is not taken in time, these problems can lead to diseases like liver cirrhosis or cancer. To raise awareness about the importance of the liver and how to take care of its health, the Bengal Liver Summit 2026 was organized. Doctors from home and abroad were present at this liver summit organized by the Indian National Association for the Study of the Liver in collaboration with private hospitals. There, the issue of maintaining good liver health along with obesity and weight control came up.
What problems occur if weight is not controlled?
Actually, obesity is not just a weight-related problem, it has a direct and profound impact on liver health. When excess fat accumulates in the body, it accumulates not only under the skin but also in the liver. This condition is called fatty liver disease or hepatic steatosis. Obesity increases insulin resistance, which disrupts the normal process of fat breakdown in the liver, and fat accumulation causes liver cells to swell.

Gradually, fatty liver can lead to inflammation, which is called non-alcoholic hepatic steatosis (NASH). This damages liver cells and scar tissue begins to form. If this scar tissue continues to increase, it can lead to liver fibrosis and subsequently liver cirrhosis, which becomes life-threatening.
Obesity also reduces the liver's detoxification capacity. As a result, toxins begin to accumulate in the body, hormonal balance is disrupted, and the risk of metabolic diseases increases. Along with high blood pressure, diabetes, and increased cholesterol, all of these create additional pressure on the liver.
To stay healthy and keep the liver healthy, weight must be controlled. Gastroenterologist Dr. Uday Ghoshal has given the same advice. The doctor says that to prevent fatty liver problems, regular exercise, weight control, low-fat diet, and stopping sugar and processed foods are necessary. At the same time, adequate water intake is required.
A question arises repeatedly in this regard: what is the normal weight for which person? When is weight too much or too little? How will you understand? In that case, Dr. Uday has provided a simple solution. He says that a person's ideal weight depends on their height.

How to measure your ideal weight?
The doctor says that first you need to see how tall a person is. You need to know how many centimeters that is. Now if that person is male, 100 should be subtracted from it. For women, 105 should be subtracted. For example, suppose a man's height is 150 centimeters. His ideal weight is 150-100 = 50 kg. If a woman's height is 150 centimeters, her ideal weight is 150-105 = 45 kg. The doctor says that healthy living and healthy eating are the key to staying healthy.
