India may head into their high-voltage T20 World Cup 2026 clash against Pakistan without Abhishek Sharma, as the young opener continues to recover from a stomach illness. Abhishek missed India’s dominant 93-run win over Namibia at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi, raising doubts over his availability for Sunday’s marquee encounter.
The defending champions have built strong momentum, but Abhishek’s fitness remains a concern. The left-hander had earlier fallen ill during India’s match against the USA in Mumbai and did not train ahead of the Namibia fixture. He was hospitalised for two days, and reports suggested he lost weight during the illness.

Though he was present in the dressing room during the Namibia match, a final call on his participation against Pakistan is still pending.
Captain hints at possible absence
At the toss against Namibia, captain Suryakumar Yadav provided a candid update. “As long as we're losing the toss and winning the game, we're fine. It's a big tournament, dew will be a big factor. Defending with dew will build our confidence. Hope our batters entertain the crowd. Abhishek isn't fine still, might take one or two games. Samson comes in. Bumrah comes in for Siraj,” said Suryakumar at the toss.
His comments suggested that Abhishek could sit out the Pakistan match as he continues to regain full fitness.

Mixed signals from the teammate
Despite the uncertainty, there have been encouraging signs. After Namibia's win, Varun Chakaravarthy sounded optimistic. “We have a strong spin attack, and I feel we have the edge over them,” he said, referring to the Pakistan clash at the post match press conference. He also added, “I think he will play the next match. I don't know. As far as I have spoken to him, he looks good. He did some practice today. He said he is on the way.”
India have now won 10 consecutive matches in T20 World Cups and will travel to Colombo for the February 15 showdown against Pakistan. Abhishek’s final status will likely depend on how he responds in the upcoming training sessions.
