An earthquake of magnitude 4.4 struck Indonesia, according to a statement issued by the National Centre for Seismology (NCS). The tremor occurred at a depth of 115 km.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the NCS said, “EQ of M: 4.4, On: 12/02/2026 18:44:18 IST, Lat: 4.07 N, Long: 96.15 E, Depth: 115 Km, Location: Indonesia.” There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties.

Indonesia remains highly vulnerable to natural disasters, including earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanic eruptions, cyclones, floods, landslides and drought. The country is located on the Pacific Ring of Fire and lies at the intersection of three active tectonic plates- the Pacific, Eurasian and Australian plates -making it prone to significant seismic and volcanic activity.

As per ANI sources, Indonesia is also at risk of megathrust earthquakes, among the most powerful types capable of generating destructive tsunamis. The 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami, triggered by a magnitude 9.0 quake originating from the Sunda megathrust off the coast of Aceh province, killed over 230,000 people across more than a dozen countries. Over 167,000 of those deaths occurred in Indonesia.

On average, Indonesia experiences about 20 earthquakes a day, most of which are too weak to be felt. However, recent quakes, including a magnitude 5.6 tremor in Cianjur in November 2022 that killed 338 people, and a magnitude 6.2 earthquake in West Sulawesi in January 2021 that left 107 dead, highlight the persistent seismic threat.
