Virat “King” Kohli has once again become the world’s top ODI batter, reclaiming the number one spot in the ICC rankings after five long years. This is the first time since 2021 that Kohli has climbed back to the summit. The moment came on Wednesday, when he overtook his own teammate, Rohit Sharma.

Rohit Sharma was leading the ODI batters’ list, with Kohli placed just behind him at number two. That equation changed after India’s match against New Zealand. In that game, Kohli played a vital knock of 93 runs, missing out on his century by just 7 runs. It was this innings that earned him enough rating points to move past Rohit and reclaim the top position.
Kohli reflects on cricket journey
After the match, while speaking to the presenter, Virat Kohli opened up about his mother’s love for keeping awards. When asked if he remembers or not how many Man of the Match trophies he has, he said that he has lost count and he just sends the trophies back home to his mother living in Gurgaon. She loves keeping them.
He also opened up about his new record as he became the second-highest run scorer across all formats of cricket in history. He reflected on his journey and childhood aspirations, describing it as a dream fulfilled. He said that he had always been aware of his abilities but understood that reaching his current position required immense hard work. Acknowledging the blessings he has received, he noted that life has given him far more than he could have ever asked for, and added that he looks back on his journey with deep grace, gratitude, and a strong sense of pride.
