A devastating fire broke out at a City Gold jewellery manufacturing factory in Nasibpur, Singur of Hooghly district on Saturday afternoon, triggering panic in the area. Thick black smoke was seen billowing out from the factory roof, turning the surroundings dark within moments.

The factory, which is reportedly quite old, had several workers inside when the fire broke out.

According to local sources, around six to seven workers, including several women, were inside the unit at the time of the incident. As flames spread rapidly, panic-stricken workers began screaming for help.

In a swift response, residents rushed to the spot with ladders and managed to rescue those trapped inside before the situation could turn more critical.

Short circuit suspected, probe underway

Preliminary findings by the fire department suggest that the blaze may have been triggered by a short circuit, although the exact cause is yet to be confirmed. The extent of the damage is still being assessed.

Fire department official Sabyasachi Chattopadhyay said, “Three fire engines brought the fire under control. The fire has been completely extinguished. However, when we arrived, we saw that the entire factory had already burned down. We will investigate the exact cause of the fire, including whether it was due to a short circuit.”
