Residents in Kolkata are facing an unusual phase of continuous rain that has lasted for nearly three days, which has caused worry over waterlogging, disruption of traffic, and infrastructure damage in some parts of the city.
What is the reason for this weather change?
According to officials from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the cause behind the continuous rain is due to the formation of low-pressure activity over the Bay of Bengal that has become almost stationary due to a lack of sufficient movement in the winds.

In addition to this, meteorologists also suggest that the reason behind the ongoing rain activity is because of the development of a trough that exists over eastern India. This phenomenon is quite uncommon for this season, considering that pre-monsoon rains are generally sporadic in nature.
City life affected
The people of Kolkata have always been welcoming of the cooling showers, especially if they arrive amid the scorching temperatures as the summer season begins its course. However, the massive downpour has also had some adverse effects around the city already. The recent IPL match of the Kolkata Knight Riders against the Punjab Kings was washed out because of the heavy rainfall on Monday. It was an important game for the KKR side, and the loss of a point might be costly for them in the tournament.

There have also been instances of waterlogged roads and drainage problems all over the city, which have proved to be a disruption of daily life.
Will the rain continue?
Although there is an indication by IMD that rainfall will reduce gradually within the coming 24 to 48 hours, light rains may persist in the region. In addition, fishermen have been asked to avoid going out to sea owing to unfavourable conditions in the Bay of Bengal.
