The workforce in India is currently dealing with an increasing health issue with around 80% of professionals being categorised as overweight, as revealed in a recent study conducted by Apollo Hospitals.
According to a report published by Times Now, there is an alarming increase in lifestyle diseases like Type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and heart disease, most of which go unnoticed in their initial stages.
These issues are usually taken for granted and seen as normal stress reactions, thus delaying the diagnosis of the actual problem.
Sedentary work environment leading to a health crisis
Working long hours from behind a desk, lack of exercise, erratic food timings, and stress are some of the main reasons cited for weight gain among professionals in India.
Although globally, people are advised to spend at least 150 minutes per week doing moderate physical exercise, this target is not met even by a large portion of professionals.
This sedentary lifestyle is already showing measurable health impacts:
Nearly half of working adults show signs of prediabetes or diabetes
One in four has high blood pressure
Many exhibit abnormal cholesterol levels
Health experts cited in the report warn that these risk factors are increasingly appearing in individuals under 30, indicating an earlier onset of metabolic disorders.
Weight flagged as key trigger for chronic illness
Among other factors, being overweight has come out as a leading contributor, accounting for four out of five cases of risky behavior associated with cardiovascular diseases.
There is evidence of the presence of nutritional deficiencies of vital vitamins like Vitamin D and Vitamin B12 in addition to early metabolic imbalance.
It seems like the concept of lifestyle illnesses is not limited to the middle age group anymore but has spread to younger generations.
Lifestyle changes can help counter early risk factors
The report recommends several ways to minimize future health risks:
Increase physical activity: Taking frequent walks or exercise breaks during the day can be helpful
Try to lose some weight: Reducing body weight by as little as 5 percent can benefit your health
Improve eating habits: Healthy meals containing protein, fiber, and other important nutrients
Take care of your well-being: Timely health check-ups and treatment for ailments such as fatty liver
Maintain good mental health: Stress management and proper sleep are crucial

Early action key to preventing long-term disease
The report concludes that while the trend is concerning, it remains reversible if addressed early. Individuals who acted on early warning signs showed improvements in conditions such as hypertension and diabetes, while those who ignored them often progressed to more serious illness.
The findings underline a broader shift in India’s health landscape, where workplace habits are increasingly shaping long-term wellbeing.
