The United Kingdom has announced fresh support for Ukraine’s energy sector and a new round of sanctions against Russia, with Prime Minister Keir Starmer saying the measures are aimed at strengthening Kyiv’s resilience and increasing pressure on Moscow.
The announcement came ahead of a G7 summit session on Tuesday, where Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was expected to join leaders from the world's major economies as discussions continued on support for Ukraine more than four years into the war, per a report by NDTV.
UK to supply nuclear fuel for Ukraine
Starmer’s office said the UK would provide enriched uranium for Ukraine’s nuclear power stations through a new energy agreement designed to support the country’s electricity needs.
According to the British government, the deal will "power Ukraine for the next two years".
The arrangement includes £210 million ($282 million) in export finance that will enable UK-based Urenco to supply enriched uranium to Energoatom, Ukraine’s state nuclear power producer, reported NDTV.
New sanctions target Russian revenues
Alongside the energy package, Britain will introduce additional sanctions against Russia.
Starmer criticised Russia’s recent attacks on Ukraine, describing them as "barbaric strikes".
The UK is "stepping up" by "choking off the revenues that fuel Putin's war and powering Ukraine through the winters ahead", his office quoted him as saying.
According to Downing Street, the latest sanctions will target Russia’s so-called shadow fleet and financial networks that are allegedly used to bypass existing international restrictions.
Officials said the measures are intended to "choke Russia's war effort across multiple fronts".
Call for stronger G7 support
The announcement comes shortly after a Russian missile barrage across Ukraine reportedly killed at least 11 people and triggered a fire at one of Kyiv’s most significant Orthodox monasteries.
At the G7 gathering, Starmer is expected to urge allied nations to increase support for Ukraine and maintain pressure on Russia.
According to his office, he will tell fellow leaders that "the G7 should collectively go further to ensure Ukraine secures the just and lasting peace it deserves".
