During the State of the Union address, US President Donald Trump announced preliminary tariffs of 126% on solar imports from India, raising fresh uncertainty over the proposed India-US trade deal. The US Commerce Department said the move followed its finding that India unfairly subsidised domestic solar manufacturing, allowing exporters to sell panels at prices that undercut American products.
The department also set initial duties ranging between 86% and 143% on Indonesia, and 81% on Laos.
The decision comes weeks after New Delhi and Washington agreed on a framework aimed at lowering tariffs on Indian exports to 18% from 50% earlier.
