Australia will tour Pakistan for the upcoming ODI series without its premier pace trio of Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc. Head coach Andrew McDonald confirmed that the decision is part of a broader workload management plan as Australia looks ahead to a demanding international schedule and the 2027 ODI World Cup.
The absence of the experienced fast bowlers has opened the door for fringe players to stake their claim in the national setup during the Pakistan series.
Australia focuses on long-term workload management
McDonald said Cricket Australia is prioritising the long-term fitness of its senior bowlers as the team prepares for a packed calendar featuring nearly 21 Test matches over the next year. The schedule includes major overseas assignments and the Ashes series, making player management a key concern for selectors and support staff.

Cummins and Hazlewood are currently involved in the IPL 2026 playoffs, while Starc recently returned after dealing with injury concerns. With very little recovery time available between franchise and international cricket, Australia decided to rest the pace trio for the Pakistan ODIs.
McDonald stressed that the move should not be seen as a lack of interest in ODI cricket. Instead, he explained that the management is taking a long-term approach to keep the bowlers physically fresh for future ICC events, especially the 2027 World Cup.
The coach added that this break provides one of the few opportunities for the fast bowlers to recover before another intense period of international cricket begins.
Opportunity knocks for fringe players
With three senior bowlers unavailable, the Pakistan tour is expected to offer valuable opportunities for emerging players to impress in Australian colours.
A massive statement of intent from Cricket Australia! Backing the legendary trio of Cummins, Starc, and Hazlewood to lead the 2027 World Cup defense shows supreme faith in experience. Managing their workloads across a brutal schedule is going to be the ultimate challenge! 🚀🇦🇺

Fast bowler Billy Stanlake has earned a recall after spending several years away from international cricket and is likely to feature prominently during the ODI series. Selectors are expected to use the tour to test Australia’s bench strength and assess backup options in the pace department.

McDonald also hinted that hard-hitting batter Tim David remains part of Australia’s long-term ODI plans. Although David has mainly featured in T20 cricket, the management believes his finishing abilities could prove crucial during the 2027 World Cup cycle.
