A late-evening confrontation in Bairagiwala village under Dehradun district’s Sahaspur police station escalated into violence between two communities, leaving one person dead and three others seriously injured.

The incident reportedly began on Saturday and quickly spiraled into stone-pelting, arson, and retaliatory attacks, prompting authorities to move in large numbers of police personnel to prevent further unrest, per Hindustan Times.

Police point to water dispute as trigger

Police have said the immediate flashpoint was a water dispute.

In a complaint filed by Ashok Kumar, a resident of Bairagiwala, the family alleged that an ongoing disagreement over irrigation water between the deceased’s family and a neighboring farmer led to the clash.

The complaint said the farmer arrived at the victim’s house with around 35 to 40 people armed with sticks and hammers at about 6.30 pm and attacked members of the family. The fatal injuries were recorded in the FIR, after which a group of protesters allegedly set fire to the house of the main suspect.

Family challenges police version

The victim’s family has disputed that version and says the killing was linked to a money row. The deceased’s father said that the confrontation was not about a fresh fight over water but about cash that had been discussed earlier.

He said, “If the police do not take action, we will not let the dead body leave this place.” The father’s account directly contradicts the police’s initial assessment and adds another layer to the investigation, which is now being viewed through both a law-and-order and a communal tension lens.

Security tightened as probe expands

A case has been registered against three accused and 25 unidentified people, and the village has been placed on alert.

The residence of one of the accused was demolished in the presence of police and district administration officials, while heavy security remained deployed after the death and the alleged targeting of houses linked to the accused.

Dehradun SP (Crime) Jitendra Chaudhary said the police were searching for the remaining accused and added that separate teams had been formed. SSP Pramendra Dobhal, meanwhile, said officers were deployed “to prevent any law-and-order situation.”
