Actors Mona Singh and Kunal Roy Kapur discuss their new show, Thode Door Thode Paas, and how strongly they relate to its central theme. The series highlights how technology in today’s world has deeply affected and often hindered interpersonal connections at their core, something both actors feel is becoming increasingly real in everyday life.

The drama revolves around the Mehta family, where the family head, played by Pankaj Kapur, challenges everyone to live with absolutely no digital contact, even bribing them with a cash reward to take the leap. The five episode series streaming on Zee5 is written by Shiirshak S Anand and directed by Ajay Bhuyan.

In an interview with PTI, Mona Singh said the concept instantly struck a chord. “We have witnessed all of that. It’s 100% nostalgia. It was a yes from the word go for this show.” Kunal Roy Kapur, who plays Singh’s husband on screen, believes the story carries mass relevance. As a parent, he understands the difficulty of removing devices from children during crucial times like exams. “Otherwise people are constantly on their devices. It becomes a kinda co-parent and you don’t know what that parent is telling them, whether they’re radicalised. It’s scary,” he said. Kapur also added that while there is no escaping the digital world since it’s tied to work and social circles, people still need to take pause and look around to see how it affects those around them.

Singh backs off but Kapur taps in youtube

Singh repeatedly stated that she doesn’t give in to the pressure of being constantly visible online. “My team keeps telling me to post, saying ‘Instagram is drying out’. I am like ‘I’ll do it at my own leisure’. Likes and comments don’t make me happy, they’re not the bar to happiness. Human touch and human relationships matter the most.” In contrast, Roy Kapur admitted he is more active online, especially on YouTube. Watching automobile, architecture and cooking videos are always on his chart list. “Digitally, the challenge for me is to get off the phone. I want to see other people’s lives,” he laughed.

Both actors cherished working with Pankaj Kapur, who shared stories from Office Office, where they rehearsed half the day and shot the episode in the other half. Singh called him a “simple, high thinking man.”
