For one evening in Los Angeles, football briefly succeeded where politics often fails.
Iran's FIFA World Cup 2026 opener against New Zealand transformed into a rare moment of unity for a deeply divided global Iranian community, as thousands of supporters put aside political differences to rally behind Team Melli.
The match ended in a dramatic 2-2 draw, but the result only told part of the story.
Outside the stadium, protesters waved Israeli flags and called for stronger action against the Iranian government. Inside, however, chants of "Iran, Iran, Iran" echoed around the stadium regardless of which flag supporters carried.
Two flags, one football team
The divisions were impossible to ignore.
According to Al Jazeera, some supporters carried the official flag of the Islamic Republic, while thousands of others displayed the pre-1979 lion and sun flag associated with opposition movements.
Political messages were everywhere. Fans wore shirts carrying slogans such as "Free Iran" and "Make Iran Great Again", while some openly expressed opposition to Tehran's leadership.
Yet whenever Iran launched an attack, those divisions appeared to fade.
Every dangerous move was met with collective anticipation, and every Iranian goal sparked widespread celebrations across the stadium.
The atmosphere contrasted sharply with fears of potential unrest before the fixture.
Protests remained outside the stadium
A small group of demonstrators gathered outside the venue before kickoff.
According to Al Jazeera, some carried banners accusing Team Melli of representing Iran's establishment, while others urged US President Donald Trump to adopt a tougher stance against Tehran despite a recent ceasefire agreement.
The protest remained small in size and had little impact on the atmosphere inside the match.
Many fans later described the game itself as overwhelmingly positive and football-focused.
There were political expressions throughout the stadium, but supporters largely chose to back the national team once the action began.

A reminder of football's unique power
The match also became a symbol of resilience for Iranian supporters after months of turmoil.
According to Al Jazeera, Iran's participation had faced complications due to geopolitical tensions, forcing the team to base itself in Mexico rather than the United States during the group stage.
The war, diplomatic disputes and travel disruptions had cast uncertainty over the campaign long before kickoff.
Even so, for 90 minutes, those concerns receded into the background.
Iran twice came from behind against New Zealand, delivering moments of collective joy to supporters who rarely agree on politics.

Sport temporarily triumphs over division
The evening also highlighted football's unusual ability to create common ground.
Inside the stadium, there were Palestinian flags, Israeli flags, lion and sun emblems and official Iranian symbols all existing in the same space.
But the loudest voice belonged to football itself.
Iran may have shared two different flags among its supporters, but for one night in Los Angeles, Team Melli had only one objective, and almost everyone celebrated when the ball crossed the line.
Politics remained present throughout the evening. Football, however, briefly became stronger.
