Argentina head into the FIFA World Cup 2026 carrying the weight of expectations and the opportunity to achieve a feat that has eluded every nation for more than six decades. Led by Lionel Messi, La Albiceleste are aiming to retain the trophy they won in Qatar and join an exclusive club in football history.

A chance to match Brazil's long-standing record

Argentina's title defence offers them a shot at matching a record held solely by Brazil since 1962. The Selecao remain the last team to win consecutive World Cups, having lifted the trophy in 1958 and 1962. Only Italy, which won back-to-back titles in 1934 and 1938, has also achieved the feat.

After their triumph in Qatar in 2022, Argentina arrive in North America as one of the tournament favourites. Under coach Lionel Scaloni, the team has maintained its consistency, blending experienced campaigners with a new generation of talent.

Another World Cup title would not only cement Argentina's place among football's elite but also end a 64-year wait for a successful title defence.

Messi's final World Cup dream

Much of the focus will once again be on Lionel Messi, who is expected to play in his sixth World Cup. The Argentine captain remains the face of the national team and could reach the milestone of 200 international appearances during the tournament.

At 38, Messi continues to inspire both teammates and supporters, but Argentina are no longer reliant on their talisman alone. Scaloni has built a well-rounded squad capable of competing at the highest level, with strength across all areas of the pitch.

Argentina have been drawn in Group J alongside Algeria, Austria and Jordan. Their opening match against Algeria will mark the start of a campaign that could see them create history. If Messi and company can lift the trophy once again, Argentina will become only the third nation to win consecutive World Cups and the first to do so since Brazil's legendary side achieved the feat more than six decades ago.
