The knockout picture at the FIFA World Cup 2026 is slowly taking shape as the expanded tournament enters a crucial phase. With 48 teams competing for the first time in World Cup history, the competition has become longer, more unpredictable and significantly more demanding.

Unlike previous editions, the tournament now features 12 groups instead of eight, and an entirely new Round of 32 has been added to the knockout bracket.

After an intense opening week, three teams have already booked their places in the next stage, while three others have officially seen their World Cup dreams come to an end.

With several heavyweight nations still fighting for qualification, the race for the last 32 is only expected to become more dramatic in the coming days.

Mexico, USA and Germany become first teams to qualify

Co-host Mexico became the first nation to secure a place in the Round of 32 after registering consecutive victories in Group A.

The Mexicans began their campaign with a comfortable win over South Africa before edging past South Korea to guarantee progression.

The United States followed soon after. Playing in front of enthusiastic home crowds, the Americans backed up an impressive opening victory over Paraguay with another strong performance against Australia to confirm their qualification.

Germany became the third team to advance. After an emphatic 7-1 demolition of Curacao, the Germans maintained their momentum with a victory over Ivory Coast.

The qualification is particularly significant for Germany after consecutive group-stage disappointments in the 2018 and 2022 editions.

Haiti, Turkiye and Tunisia become first casualties

At the other end of the table, three nations have already been eliminated.

Haiti became the first team to crash out after suffering defeats to Scotland and Brazil. Their return to the World Cup after more than five decades ended in disappointment.

Turkiye also endured a difficult campaign, losing to Australia and Paraguay to bow out early in their first appearance since 2002.

Tunisia completed the unwanted trio after suffering heavy defeats against Sweden and Japan.

Their exit extended a long-standing trend, with Tunisia still searching for a first-ever appearance in the knockout stages.

New format and tie-break rules add extra drama

The World Cup expansion has significantly altered qualification scenarios.

The top two teams from each of the 12 groups automatically advance, while the eight best third-placed teams also progress.

FIFA has also introduced a major change to tie-break regulations.

Head-to-head results now take precedence over overall goal difference when teams finish level on points, a departure from previous editions.

The knockout stage will begin with the Round of 32 on June 28 before moving to the Round of 16, quarterfinals, semifinals and the final on July 19.
