The Netherlands delivered a statement performance at the FIFA World Cup 2026, thrashing Sweden 5-1 in Houston to take control of Group F. Ronald Koeman's side bounced back strongly from their opening draw against Japan, with Brian Brobbey and Cody Gakpo leading the charge in a dominant display.
Brobbey gives Dutch dream start
The Dutch wasted little time asserting themselves and were rewarded with an early breakthrough. Brian Brobbey opened the scoring before doubling the advantage minutes later, putting Sweden on the back foot from the outset.

Sweden found it difficult to create meaningful opportunities and spent much of the first half defending against relentless Dutch pressure.
Gakpo adds a brace as the Netherlands cruise
Any hopes of a Swedish comeback disappeared soon after halftime. Cody Gakpo struck twice in quick succession to stretch the lead to 4-0 and effectively put the result beyond doubt.
Sweden managed a consolation goal through Anthony Elanga in the 59th minute, but it did little to change the flow of the contest. The Netherlands remained in complete control and continued to push forward. Substitute Crysencio Summerville capped off an impressive team performance by scoring the fifth goal late in the game, completing a comprehensive victory for the Oranje.

The result moves the Netherlands to the top of Group F with four points from two matches. The convincing win also boosts their goal difference and strengthens their chances of reaching the knockout stage.
Sweden, meanwhile, face a must-win situation in their final group match against Japan. The Netherlands will take on Tunisia knowing another positive result could secure their place in the Round of 32.
With Brobbey and Gakpo in top form, the Dutch have sent a strong message to the rest of the tournament and look increasingly capable of making a deep run in the competition.
