Brazil’s World Cup campaign got underway with a 1-1 draw against Morocco in Group C, but the match was overshadowed by a major VAR controversy that left players, fans and analysts questioning FIFA’s new review protocols.

Morocco made a bright start and took the lead through Ismael Saibari, putting Brazil on the back foot in their opening match of the FIFA World Cup 2026. The South American giants struggled to create clear opportunities for long periods and looked vulnerable against Morocco’s organised defence.

Brazil eventually found a way back into the contest through Vinicius Junior. The Real Madrid star delivered an important equaliser to rescue a point and prevent an opening-game defeat. While the draw avoided an early setback, Brazil were left disappointed after failing to secure all three points.

Morocco, meanwhile, produced another disciplined performance on the world stage and showed why they remain one of the tournament’s most dangerous underdogs.

VAR decision sparks debate

The biggest talking point came from a controversial VAR intervention. During the match, the referee awarded Brazil a corner kick, but a video review later determined that a Brazilian player had touched the ball last before it crossed the line.

As a result, the decision was overturned, and Morocco was awarded a goal kick. Although the review led to the correct outcome, the incident triggered confusion among viewers and football experts regarding the scope of FIFA’s revised VAR rules.

Many questioned why certain restart decisions could be reviewed while others could not. The debate quickly spread across social media, with supporters demanding greater transparency from FIFA regarding the application of the technology.

The incident added to growing scrutiny of VAR during the opening days of the World Cup, with several contentious decisions already attracting attention.

Brazil leave their first Group C match with a point but plenty of questions to answer. Morocco, on the other hand, will be encouraged by their performance and the result. As the tournament progresses, FIFA may face increasing pressure to clarify its VAR guidelines to avoid further confusion and controversy.
