Assam Rifles, in a joint operation with the Manipur Police, recovered a large cache of explosives from the Jiribam–Tipaimukh Road in Manipur’s Pherzawl district on Thursday and arrested two persons, officials said.

The operation was carried out by personnel of Assam Rifles along with the Manipur Police as part of heightened security arrangements ahead of the Republic Day celebrations. A mobile vehicle check post had been set up along the road to monitor movement in the area.

According to officials, a vehicle approaching the check post raised suspicion due to its unusual movement. When security personnel signalled the vehicle to stop for inspection, the occupants abandoned it and attempted to flee on foot.

A joint team from Assam Rifles and Manipur Police immediately chased the suspects and apprehended two individuals after a brief pursuit. No injuries were reported during the operation, officials confirmed.

Search of the abandoned vehicle led to the recovery of a significant quantity of explosive materials. Officials said 30 gelatin sticks, 20 detonators, safety fuse, flexible wire and approximately ₹1 lakh in cash were seized. The Bolero vehicle used to transport the materials was also taken into custody.

As per reports, security officials said that the recovered items are commonly used in the preparation of improvised explosive devices (IEDs), raising serious security concerns. The arrested individuals, along with the seized explosives and vehicle, have been handed over to the local police for further investigation and legal proceedings.

Further investigation is underway to determine the source of the explosives, their intended destination and whether the arrested persons have links to any larger network.
