A 27-year-old woman constable of the Delhi Police, who was a commando in the SWAT team of the Special Cell, died on Tuesday in a private hospital in Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh. The constable, Kajal, died just days after she was allegedly beaten up brutally by her husband at their home in southwest Delhi.

Kajal suffered severe head injuries when she was beaten with a metal dumbbell, and her head was smashed against a door frame in a domestic dispute at their Dwarka Mor residence.

Assault at Dwarka Mor

The constable was attacked on the night of January 22 after an argument with her husband, Ankur Chaudhary, who is 28. She was rushed to a private hospital near Dwarka, where doctors found her to be brain-dead. She was shifted to another private hospital in Nehru Nagar, Ghaziabad, on January 25, and she died at 6 am on Tuesday.

Chilling phone calls before the attack

Kajal’s brother, Nikhil, who is also a Delhi Police constable at the ACP office on Parliament Street, told Hindustan Times that Chaudhary had called him during the fight.

According to Nikhil, Kajal briefly spoke to him to explain the situation, but Chaudhary allegedly snatched the phone and asked him to record the conversation. “My sister took the phone and tried to explain what had happened. Chaudhary got offended by some remarks she made. He snatched the phone and asked me to record the conversation as evidence, saying he was going to kill my sister. I then heard her screaming before the call got disconnected,” Nikhil told the Hindustan Times.

He also alleges that Chaudhary called him back 5 minutes later, claiming he had killed Kajal and asking him to come to Delhi to pick up her body.

“When I reached Delhi around midnight, his family had already arrived, and he had admitted my sister to a nearby private hospital, where doctors declared her brain dead”, Nikhil said.

Dowry harassment allegations

Kajal’s family has alleged that Chaudhary was forcing her to pay dowry, cash and a car. The couple married in November 2023 after four years of dating and has a one-and-a-half-year-old son, who was staying with his maternal grandparents at the time of the incident.

The police had initially registered an attempt to murder case and arrested Chaudhary on the same night. He appeared in court in Delhi and was sent to judicial custody.

“We registered a case of attempt to murder and arrested the commando's husband, Ankur Chaudhary, the same night the crime was committed. He was produced before a Delhi court and sent to judicial custody. Now that the commando has died, the case has been converted from attempt to murder to murder,” said Madhup Tiwari, Special Commissioner of Police (Law and Order, Zone-2). Investigations into the case are ongoing.
