Electricity consumers across Uttar Pradesh are set to pay more for power from June, with the Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Limited (UPPCL) announcing a 10% Fuel and Power Purchase Adjustment Surcharge (FPPAS). The additional charge will be reflected in electricity bills issued during the June billing cycle.

The surcharge has been introduced to offset rising fuel and power procurement costs incurred by electricity distribution companies. Officials said the increase is linked to fluctuations in fuel prices and the higher cost of purchasing power to meet growing demand.

What is the fuel surcharge?

The Fuel and Power Purchase Adjustment Surcharge (FPPAS) is a mechanism that allows power distribution companies to recover additional costs arising from changes in fuel prices and electricity procurement expenses. Rather than revising tariffs annually, these costs can be passed on to consumers through periodic surcharges.

Under the latest notification, consumers will have to pay an additional 10% over their regular electricity charges in June. Officials say the surcharge corresponds to previous power purchase costs and fuel price variations.

Why are power bills increasing now?

According to the reports of mint the decision comes amid rising electricity demand across Uttar Pradesh due to the ongoing summer heatwave. Reports indicate that higher temperatures have significantly increased power consumption, forcing utilities to procure additional electricity at elevated rates.

UPPCL has reportedly stated that the surcharge is necessary to recover these additional costs and maintain the financial health of the power sector.

Who will be affected?

As per mint quoted in their report the surcharge is expected to affect consumers across all categories, including residential, commercial, and industrial users. The additional amount will vary depending on electricity consumption, meaning households with higher usage may see a larger increase in their monthly bills.

The move is likely to impact millions of consumers across the state, especially as it coincides with peak summer electricity usage.

Consumer concerns grow

The announcement has triggered concern among consumers already dealing with high temperatures and rising household expenses. Discussions online have focused on the timing of the surcharge, with many users pointing out that electricity usage typically peaks during summer months.

Consumer groups have previously questioned fuel surcharge calculations and called for greater transparency in power procurement costs.

The revised bills are expected to be issued beginning in June.
