The killing of a 17-year-old in Ghaziabad’s Khoda area has triggered tension and protests after police said the boy was stabbed during an argument on Thursday afternoon and later died at a hospital in Noida on Friday.

The incident, which took place in Lokpriya Vihar, has also drawn sharp political reaction, with Uttar Pradesh deputy chief minister KP Maurya promising strict action.

An afternoon gone decidedly awry

According to Assistant Commissioner of Police (Indirapuram) Abhishek Srivastava, the boy and the suspect were with friends when the altercation began around 3.30 pm.

Police said the suspect called the victim over, a verbal exchange followed, and then he pulled out a knife and fled with his friends after stabbing the teenager. The injured boy’s friends and family rushed him to a hospital, where he succumbed the next day.

Fresh claims cast a longer shadow

The victim’s family has put forward a more disturbing account of what led to the attack.

His mother told ANI that her son was asked whether he had ever seen a goat being slaughtered and said he was stabbed after answering no. She alleged that the boy had been tricked into coming out on Eid and claimed police failed to act in time.

A maternal aunt also alleged that the accused was seen at the hospital.

Authorities press on with the pursuit

Police said the suspect and his associates are absconding and that several teams have been formed to trace them.

Based on a complaint filed by the victim’s elder brother, Khoda police registered an FIR under sections 109(1) and 352 late on Thursday. The brother said the teenager had recently cleared his class 10 examinations and had no enmity with the accused.
