The results of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation elections were declared on Friday, where the Bharatiya Janata Party emerged as the single largest party in the 227-member civic body.

According to figures released by the State Election Commission, the BJP has won with 89 seats, falling short of a simple majority but establishing a clear lead over its rivals. The Shiv Sena (UBT) secured 65 seats, while the Shiv Sena won 29 wards. The Indian National Congress secured 24 seats.

Polling was held on Thursday after a delay of nearly four years, with voter turnout recorded at 52.94%, officials said.

Polls held after prolonged delay

The BMC elections were last conducted in 2017 and were originally due in 2022. However, the polls were postponed because of the COVID-19 pandemic, disputes over ward delimitation and a prolonged legal challenge over OBC reservation in local body elections.

After the delay, over 54 lakh voters cast their ballots across Mumbai’s 227 wards, marking the city’s return to a full-scale civic election.

BJP celebrates result, alliance talks likely

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis welcomed the outcome, calling it a major endorsement of the BJP and its alliance partners.

In a video message shared on X, Fadnavis said, “The Bharatiya Janata Party and our alliance partners have secured a clear majority in about 25 of the 29 municipal corporations, including Mumbai.”

With no party crossing the halfway mark on its own, attention is now expected to shift to the formation of the civic administration, including the election of the mayor and standing committee members.

Ward-wise results declared

The State Election Commission has declared the results for all 227 wards on Friday. BJP candidates won key wards across the western suburbs, few parts of the island city and eastern corridors, while Shiv Sena (UBT) retained strong pockets in central Mumbai and select suburban clusters.

A full ward-wise list of winners has been released by election authorities.
